Katie Fleming - Assistant Coach
I have been athletic pretty much my whole life. I started in gymnastics when I was 2 and competed for 10 years. After gymnastics, I turned my focus to basketball and track. In track, I did the high jump and relays but sometimes my coach would put me in to run the mile if we were close in points...and I hated running the mile. Who knew where that would take me years later! In college and graduate school, I continued to exercise but moved my activities to a fitness center. In 1999, I decided I wanted to try a triathlon and began with a sprint over in Clermont. My boyfriend at the time (now husband, Paul) came to watch and he decided he wanted to do the next one with me. And then we were hooked!! We trained and raced together, working our way up to the Olympic distance and eventually the Florida Challenge half-ironman distance race in Clermont in 2001. It was at the finish line of that race that Paul proposed (and I accepted). A little over a year later, we honeymooned in Hawaii and watched the Ironman World Championships in Kona. We were both inspired by this race and we decided we would sign up for Ironman Florida in 2003. The Ironman races fill up very quickly when the registration opens so in the midst of training for our first race, we decided we wanted to sign up for yet another, Ironman Lake Placid. So after completing Ironman Florida in 2003 and Ironman Lake Placid in 2004, I took some time off from triathlon racing so that we could start our family. We welcomed Matthew to the world on July 14, 2005 and Michael on February 22, 2007. In 2007, I was asked to coach a friend for the Health First Triathlon. This was an exciting opportunity for me to get back into the sport after having my second baby. Over the twelve weeks we trained together, I watched her grow faster and stronger in each of the three disciplines. But more importanly, I watched her develop a greater love for the sport. And that's what it is all about! Katie has her B.S. in Health Services Management from the University of Kentucky and her M.S. in Health Administration from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She works full-time for Health First Health Plans and is a Spinning Instructor at Pro Health in Melbourne.
